The Nutrition Research Centre Ireland (NRCI) is a multi-disciplinary research group within South East Technological University that studies the role of nutrition and lifestyle for human well-being. The NRCI enables scientists to conduct research across a diverse range of human health-related disciplines including biotechnology, eye health, cognition, biochemistry, cancer and mental health.

The NRCI was established in 2016 and evolved from the Macular Pigment Research Group (established 2006). The NRCI has been self-funded since it’s fruition, as a result of funding secured by public entities and private bodies.

The Brain and Ocular Nutrition Conference (BON) conference has come a long way since its inception in 2011, founded by Dr. Alan Howard and Professor John Nolan. Evolving from its roots in macular carotenoids and age-related macular degeneration, the conference has grown into a global forum addressing broader aspects of visual function and cognition. The rebranding in 2015 to the Macular Carotenoids Conference and later to the BON Conference in 2018 reflects the expanding scope of research within the network. BON is now a global platform dedicated to exploring the profound impact of nutrition on eye and brain health. BON has evolved over the years, attracting leading scientists, researchers, and nutrition enthusiasts from around the world. The annual conference serves as a catalyst for groundbreaking research, discussions, and collaborations in the field of brain and ocular nutrition.

Supplement Certified Ltd, a successful spinout from the Nutrition Research Centre Ireland at South East Technological University was Founded in March 2022. Supplement Certified is an independent supplement testing and certification company that provides third-party, ISO-accredited testing to ensure dietary supplements meet their label claims. By applying rigorous scientific standards, the company helps supplement brands build consumer confidence and uphold product integrity. Through its internationally trademarked certification logo, Supplement Certified distinguishes products that meet label claims and stability requirements. The company is already collaborating with dietary supplement brands across Ireland, Europe, Mexico, and the US.
