Health 3.0

A new approach to preventative health

What is Health 3.0?
Ageing doesn’t have to mean declining health.

Health 3.0 is my pioneering new approach to maintaining good health throughout your life. Instead of waiting for disease to develop, then relying on costly medicines to treat them, let's do what we can to help prevent them from happening in the first place.

Health 3.0 is about empowering you to take control of your well-being by incorporating preventative strategies and practices to your daily life.

It’s my mission to give you the information and knowledge you need to age healthier and to advocate for a more proactive approach to healthcare. An approach that focuses on prevention through science backed targeted nutrition and a healthy lifestyle.

Understanding Health 2.0

Health 2.0, our current system focuses on treating diseases once they present. An example is the treatment of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a major cause of vision loss. The "standard of care" for AMD typically involves expensive pharmaceutical injections directly into the eye to slow the disease's progression.

While these treatments are crucial and can be incredibly beneficial when necessary, they are reactive solutions. They don’t prevent AMD from developing or halt its progression.

The injections help to manage the damage caused by the disease, but what if we took the necessary steps to minimise the risk of the disease developing in the first place? That’s Health 3.0.

Why Prevention Matters

Even when you feel healthy, your body is continuously working to maintain that state. Every time your cells use oxygen for energy (a process called oxygen metabolism), they naturally produce byproducts called Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) and free radicals. While this is a normal part of cellular function, too many of these by-products can harm your cells. This imbalance is what we call oxidative stress, and it's a key factor in the development of many diseases.

Where Does Oxidative Stress Affect Us Most?

Your eyes and brain are two of the most oxygen-demanding areas of your body. These vital cells, essential for vision and mental acuity, are also particularly vulnerable to damage. As we age, oxidative stress builds up as our antioxidant defenses decline, increasing the risk of cellular damage. This is why incorporating antioxidants into your diet is vital to your eye and brain health.

What Are Antioxidants and Why Do You Need Them?

Antioxidants act as your body’s defence system against oxidative stress. They work to protect your cells from damage and inflammation.

Take for example the retina at the back of your eye, it’s highly susceptible to oxidative stress. By increasing protective macular pigments through antioxidant-rich foods or supplements, you can contribute to maintaining healthy vision.

Pablo Castillo Carrillo (1922–2020) was a dedicated woodsman who continued chopping wood up until a few weeks before his passing at the age of 98. He was a proud father of 18 children from two women. Remarkably, longevity runs in his family, his mother, Maria Francisca Castillo Carrillo, lived to 110, and his maternal grandfather, Tomas Castillo Armas, was also known for his long life. Pablo’s story exemplifies the resilience and strength that can come from a lifetime of active, hands-on living.

How Does This Relate to Diseases Like Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and Alzheimer’s Disease?

Oxidative stress fuels inflammation, which is linked to many age-related diseases, including AMD and Alzheimer’s.
Both conditions involve the gradual deterioration of critical cells in your eyes or brain. This leads to impaired vision and memory.

The traditional approach (Health 2.0) addresses inflammation only after it occurs and relies on introducing injections or medications when the disease has already advanced.

In contrast, Health 3.0 emphasises preventing the problem before it takes hold. By mitigating oxidative stress with antioxidants, you can reduce inflammation and proactively protect your eyes and brain from damage.

The Good News

Healthy ageing isn’t just a possibility, it’s something you can actively influence. Scientific evidence shows that supporting and nourishing your body with the right nutrients, especially antioxidants, can make a significant difference. Embracing a Health 3.0 lifestyle means making consistent, positive choices that contribute to your long-term health and wellbeing.
